Neuro-scientific research points to the power of dance as one of the best ways to create mental clarity and health.
As a Registered Massage Therapist for 30 years, my understanding of how wonderfully the body works and responds to proper, intelligent exercise has always kept me interested in physical fitness. I love to swim, hike, walk with friends, partake in a good yoga class, and I love to dance.
A few years ago I was taking a course at The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Thanks Renee, for getting me to Kripalu in the first place. Kripalu is a wonderful place offering great food, fellowship, fun and learning. One of the greatest things they offer is free “noon dance”. On Saturdays this dance is complete with live drumming. Reluctantly at first, I stepped into the dance room. Dan Leven, who later became my teacher, was leading that day. He was so alive, and full of passion for the dance. The drumming awoke something inside of me that had been asleep for many years. It was in that moment that I fell in love with Shake Your Soul.
About 18 months year later I was meeting with one of my clients who is a life coach. We were exploring different directions I could take as I moved forward in life. We had several sessions exploring what it meant to be in my 50’s, heading toward my 60’s. Thank you Carol. To my surprise, those few moments of complete and utter joy and freedom I experienced in the Shake Your Soul workshop at Kripalu resurfaced. This was not what I was expecting to discover! I had fallen deeply in love with Shake Your Soul. There was no turning back. No gentle slide into a comfy armchair. It became abundantly clear that I needed to take the SYS training. The rest is history.
What to expect:
Each class begins with a gentle, yet complete head-to-toe stretch, followed by a progression of movements designed to bring flexibility to the joints. As the tempo of the music increases, movements become more rhythmic and powerful while participants are encouraged to let go of their fear and move with confidence and freedom. As the class winds down we are led through a cool down, complete with qi gong, aromatherapy and visualization.
What to wear:
- Layered yoga-type clothing
- nonslip socks or nonslip indoor shoes
What to bring:
- Yoga Mat (we have extra if you forget)
- Water Bottle
This class is appropriate for all fitness levels. You make the class as vigorous or as gentle as you choose. If you are new to exercise, consult you physician before beginning and fitness program.
A portion of the proceeds from Shake Your Soul Inglewood classes go to starthrowerfoundation.org. The mission of Starthrower Foundation is to provide education opportunities by raising and distributing funds to give a hand up, not a hand out, to young Haitian people living in the north coast city of Cap-Haitien and the nearby mountain village of St-Raphael ( Sen Rafayel), Haiti.
